Simultaneous actions
The adverbial contemporary participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) expresses an ongoing background action happening at the exact same time as the main verb. In English, it usually translates to a word ending in "-ing" or a phrase starting with "while doing...".
You can recognize this participle by its -ąc suffix. Because it acts as an adverb, it is indeclinable and never changes—keeping the exact same form regardless of gender, number, or case.
| Flying into space, I was a bit afraid. | Lecąc w kosmos, trochę się bałem. |
| The astronaut looked at the stars while eating breakfast. | Astronauta patrzył na gwiazdy, jedząc śniadanie. |
The "same subject" rule
There is one strict rule for the -ąc participle: the action in the participle phrase and the action of the main verb must be performed by the exact same subject.
In this example, the satellite is doing both things—flying over the country and taking pictures:
| Flying over our country, the satellite was taking photos. | Lecąc nad naszym krajem, satelita robił zdjęcia. |
Similarly, here, "we" are the ones both preparing the mission and waiting:
| Preparing a new mission, we waited for a rocket. | Przygotowując nową misję, czekaliśmy na rakietę. |
Usage and punctuation
Whenever you use a participle clause, separate it from the rest of the sentence with a comma, whether it comes at the beginning or the end.
Most verbs form this participle predictably from their third-person plural present tense, but pay special attention to the highly common verb być (to be), which takes the form będąc (being).
| Being a young astronaut, you have to work a lot. | Będąc młodym astronautą, musisz dużo pracować. |
| I like to observe the sky while drinking coffee. | Lubię obserwować niebo, pijąc kawę. |
| Looking through a telescope, I found a new moon. | Patrząc przez teleskop, znalazłem nowy księżyc. |
