When you want to justify an action or explain a situation before stating the outcome (like saying "Since..." or "Because..." in English), use ponieważ.
While the casual word for "because" (bo) is almost always placed in the middle of a sentence, ponieważ is slightly more formal and is the perfect word to start a sentence with a reason clause.
Always place a comma at the end of the ponieważ clause to separate it from the main sentence.
Explaining delays
Let's look at giving formal reasons for delays, such as a breakdown (awaria) or a strike (strajk). If a bus or train is running late, it is delayed (opóźniony).
| Since there was a breakdown, the train was delayed. | Ponieważ była awaria, pociąg był opóźniony. |
| Since there was a strike, our director cancelled the meeting. | Ponieważ był strajk, nasz dyrektor odwołał spotkanie. |
Giving personal excuses
When making formal excuses for missing work or school, you might need to explain that you overslept (zaspać). To formally "excuse" or justify your absence (nieobecność), use the verb usprawiedliwić.
| Since I overslept yesterday, I was late to work. | Ponieważ wczoraj zaspałem, spóźniłem się do pracy. |
| Since I was sick, I have to excuse my absence. | Ponieważ byłem chory, muszę usprawiedliwić swoją nieobecność. |
Unexpected situations
You can use this same structure to explain other situations, such as finding a business closed (nieczynny), dealing with a theft (kradzież), or handling an event that is unexpected (nieoczekiwany).
| Since the store was closed, I bought nothing. | Ponieważ sklep był nieczynny, nic nie kupiłem. |
| Since the theft was unexpected, the director had to return. | Ponieważ kradzież była nieoczekiwana, dyrektor musiał wrócić. |
