Even native Polish speakers sometimes confuse bynajmniej and przynajmniej because they look and sound so similar. However, their meanings are completely different.
Przynajmniej (At least)
Przynajmniej means "at least". You will use it to point out a minimum acceptable standard, or to find a silver lining in a less-than-perfect situation—like a beginner's pottery class.
| You are molding this pot, but at least it has a bottom. | Lepisz ten garnek, ale on przynajmniej ma dno. |
Bynajmniej (By no means)
Bynajmniej means "by no means" or "not at all". It is used to emphatically deny something or to clear up a misconception.
Importantly, bynajmniej almost always appears alongside the word nie to strengthen a negative sentence.
| This is by no means a masterpiece. | To bynajmniej nie jest arcydzieło. |
| Your asymmetrical vase is by no means aesthetic. | Twój asymetryczny wazon bynajmniej nie jest estetyczny. |
Finding the Silver Lining
As your pottery skills grow, you will find yourself balancing what your creations aren't with what they at least have going for them.
| The clay is fragile, but at least you know how to fire it. | Glina jest krucha, ale przynajmniej wiesz, jak ją wypalić. |
To summarize the difference, here are both particles working side-by-side: bynajmniej emphasizes the negative, while przynajmniej introduces the positive fallback.
| This color is by no means aesthetic, but at least we have glaze. | Ten kolor bynajmniej nie jest estetyczny, ale przynajmniej mamy szkliwo. |
