Modifying Indefinite Pronouns
When you want to say "something new," "nothing banal," or "anything innovative," use an indefinite pronoun like coś (something), nic (nothing), or cokolwiek (anything) followed by an adjective.
In Polish, the adjective modifying these pronouns must be in the neuter singular Genitive form. This is known as the partitive Genitive. For most adjectives, drop the nominative ending and add -ego (for example, nowy becomes nowego).
| This new vision is something brilliant. | Ta nowa wizja to coś genialnego. |
| We need new inspiration to invent something innovative. | Potrzebujemy nowej inspiracji, żeby wymyślić coś nowatorskiego. |
| We reject the old pattern because we want to create something unconventional. | Odrzucamy stary schemat, bo chcemy stworzyć coś nieszablonowego. |
Using "nic" and "cokolwiek"
This exact same rule applies to negative and free-choice pronouns like nic and cokolwiek.
| Our team does not want anything banal, they will design something breakthrough. | Nasz zespół nie chce nic banalnego, zaprojektuje coś przełomowego. |
| If we don't change this system, we won't invent anything innovative. | Jeśli nie zmienimy tego systemu, nie wymyślimy nic nowatorskiego. |
| Did you notice anything revealing in this project? | Zauważyłeś w tym projekcie cokolwiek odkrywczego? |
| To invent anything innovative, you need not only a vision, but also inspiration. | Żeby wymyślić cokolwiek nowatorskiego, potrzebujesz nie tylko wizji, ale i inspiracji. |
