The Japanese language has three scripts, called hiragana, katakana and kanji.
- Hiragana is mostly used to represent the sounds of originally Japanese words.
- Katakana is mostly used to represent the sounds of foreign words and loanwords.
- Kanji are Chinese characters that represent entire words or word parts.
