In an earlier lesson, we've already learned that we can use から after a sentence to explain the reason for something.
| It doesn't eat, because it's a robot. | ロボット です から、 食べません。robotto desu kara, tabemasen. |
| John didn't come to the party, because he had plans. | ジョン さん は 予定 が ありました から、 パーティー に 来ません でした。jon san wa yotei ga arimashita kara, paatii ni kimasen deshita. |
In that lesson, the part of the sentence ending in から was in the polite form, which sounds very formal. In order to sound more natural, we can better use the plain form in the part of the sentence ending in から, even if the main clause is in the polite form.
In order to use から after a noun or a な-adjective, we add the copula だ before から.
| It doesn't eat, because it's a robot. | ロボット だ から、 食べません。robotto da kara, tabemasen. |
| Because it is quiet, she likes studying in the library. | 静か だ から、 図書館 で 勉強するの が 好き です。shizuka da kara, toshokan de benkyousuruno ga suki desu. |
| Because that restaurant was not quiet, I didn't like it very much. | その レストラン は 静か じゃ なかった から、 あまり 好き じゃ ありません でした。sono resutoran wa shizuka ja nakatta kara, amari suki ja arimasen deshita. |
We can also use から right after an い-adjective or a verb.
| Because it's going to be hot tomorrow, let's buy swimsuits. | 明日 は 暑い から、 水着 を 買いましょう。ashita wa atsui kara, mizugi o kaimashou. |
| Because it was cold yesterday, I wore a coat. | 昨日 は 寒かった から、 コート を 着ました。kinou wa samukatta kara, kooto o kimashita. |
| John didn't come to the party, because he had plans. | ジョン さん は 予定 が あった から、 パーティー に 来ません でした。jon san wa yotei ga atta kara, paatii ni kimasen deshita. |
Note that these sentences are still in the polite form, and are therefore still polite, even though the clause ending in から uses the plain form. To make the entire sentence casual, we have to use the plain form in the main clause as well.
| It doesn't eat, because it's a robot. | ロボット だ から、 食べない。robotto da kara, tabenai. |
| It's cold, so I'll wear a coat. | 寒い から、 コート を 着る。samui kara, kooto o kiru. |
