The future tense of -ire verbs (-irò)

The Future Tense of -ire Verbs

To complete our toolkit for making predictions, we just need to learn how to conjugate -ire verbs in the futuro semplice.

The rule is simple: drop the final -e from the infinitive (for example, costruire becomes costruir-) and add the standard future endings you already know.

PronounFuture Endingcostruire (to build)
iocostruirò
tu-aicostruirai
lui/leicostruirà
noi-emocostruiremo
voi-etecostruirete
loro-annocostruiranno

Ecology and the Environment

Let's use these verbs to talk about nature, ecology, and the future of our planet. Here are regular -ire verbs like pulire (to clean), diminuire (to decrease), and costruire (to build) in action:

Next year I will build an ecological car.
L'anno prossimo costruirò una macchina ecologica.
Will you build an ecological hotel in the mountains?
Costruirai un albergo ecologico in montagna?
Global pollution will decrease soon.
L'inquinamento globale diminuirà presto.
We will decrease the pollution in this city.
Diminuiremo l'inquinamento in questa città.
Will you all clean the environment in a month?
Pulirete l'ambiente tra un mese?

Cause and Effect in the Future

When making predictions, we often talk about conditions and consequences using "if" (se). If an action in the future depends on a condition that will also happen in the future, Italian uses the future tense for both verbs.

Notice how these future conjugations pair perfectly together to talk about the impact of our actions:

If we clean the sea, the waste will decrease.
Se puliremo il mare, i rifiuti diminuiranno.
If cars disappear, we will have fun in the parks.
Se le macchine spariranno, ci divertiremo nei parchi.
