Strong contrasts (bensì, al contrario)

When debating fashion trends or personal style, you often need to correct a misconception by stating what is not the case, followed by what is. Italian uses specific connectors to express these strong contrasts.

Replacing Ideas with bensì

The connector bensì translates to "but rather." You use it to directly substitute an incorrect idea with the right one. It always follows a negative statement (usually containing non).

This dress is not original, but rather very outdated.
Questo vestito non è originale, bensì molto antiquato.
I do not love flashy colors, but rather the understated style.
Non amo i colori vistosi, bensì lo stile sobrio.
You do not need a new suit, but rather this accessory.
Non hai bisogno di un abito nuovo, bensì di questo accessorio.

Emphasizing the Opposite with al contrario

When you want to assert that the exact opposite of a previous statement is true, use al contrario ("on the contrary"). While bensì usually bridges two halves of a single sentence, al contrario typically begins a new sentence to powerfully contradict the previous thought.

This scarf is not outdated. On the contrary, it is very eccentric!
Questa sciarpa non è antiquata. Al contrario, è molto eccentrica!
Black is not boring. On the contrary, it enhances elegance.
Il nero non è noioso. Al contrario, valorizza l'eleganza.
The designer does not copy. On the contrary, he creates original models.
Lo stilista non copia. Al contrario, crea modelli originali.
