The relative pronoun "che"
Use the relative pronoun che (who, that, which) to connect ideas. It never changes form and works for both people and things, acting as either the subject or the direct object.
| These are the volunteers who help the community. | Questi sono i volontari che aiutano la comunità. |
| The association that we saw yesterday is new. | L'associazione che abbiamo visto ieri è nuova. |
| The funds that we asked for are for the community. | I fondi che abbiamo chiesto sono per la comunità. |
Attaching reflexive pronouns to commands
When urging others to get involved, you will often use reflexive verbs like unirsi (to join), iscriversi (to sign up), and impegnarsi (to commit oneself).
Reflexive pronouns (ti, ci, vi) attach directly to the end of affirmative informal commands to form a single word:
- unisci (join) + ti (yourself) = unisciti
- uniamo (let's join) + ci (ourselves) = uniamoci
- impegnate (commit) + vi (yourselves) = impegnatevi
| Let's join the association that helps the city! | Uniamoci all'associazione che aiuta la città! |
| Sign up for the volunteer group that works tonight. | Iscriviti al gruppo di volontari che lavora stasera. |
| Commit yourselves to the charitable project that we started. | Impegnatevi nel progetto solidale che abbiamo iniziato. |
You can combine these reflexive commands with che to describe the groups people are joining:
