Pronominal verbs of effort and resignation (sforzarsi, rassegnarsi)

Pushing Your Limits

In Italian, many verbs expressing intense physical and mental states are pronominal verbs. These require reflexive pronouns (mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si) to indicate that the action or its emotional toll falls back onto the subject.

To talk about extreme environments like high-altitude mountaineering, you will frequently use verbs like spingersi (to push oneself) and scoraggiarsi (to get discouraged).

The mountaineer must push himself beyond the limit to reach the peak.
L'alpinista deve spingersi oltre il limite per raggiungere la vetta.
During the feat, the team does not get discouraged, not even in front of the most dangerous crevasse.
Durante l'impresa, la squadra non si scoraggia nemmeno davanti al crepaccio più pericoloso.

Striving and Forcing Oneself

When expressing a focused, strained effort to accomplish a goal, use sforzarsi (to strive / to force oneself).

If you want to state exactly what you are striving to do, sforzarsi must be followed by the preposition di before an infinitive.

We must strive to overcome this deep crevasse, otherwise we will not arrive at the camp.
Dobbiamo sforzarci di superare questo crepaccio profondo, altrimenti non arriveremo al campo.
We are tired, but we force ourselves to complete this epic feat.
Noi siamo stanchi, ma ci sforziamo di completare questa impresa epica.

Resigning and Persisting

Sometimes the mountain wins. To express giving up and accepting a situation, use rassegnarsi (to resign oneself). When connecting this verb to a noun or another action, it requires the preposition a.

The mountaineer resigned himself to the freezing wind.
L'alpinista si è rassegnato al vento gelido.
They are too tired and resign themselves to looking at the peak from afar.
Loro sono troppo stanchi e si rassegnano a guardare la vetta da lontano.

Conversely, to express a stubborn, sometimes unreasonable refusal to quit despite the conditions, use ostinarsi (to persist stubbornly).

If the weather is worsening, why do you continue to persist and push yourself into the freezing cold?
Se il tempo va peggiorando, perché continui a ostinarti e a spingerti nel gelo?

Knowing When to Quit

Mountaineering requires balancing incredible effort with the reality of nature. You will often use these pronominal verbs together to contrast pushing forward with gracefully giving up.

You can strive as much as you want, but at a certain point you must resign yourself to nature.
Puoi sforzarti quanto vuoi, ma a un certo punto devi rassegnarti alla natura.
