Present Subjunctive of Essere and Avere
The present subjunctive forms of essere (to be) and avere (to have) are highly irregular.
Essere
| Pronoun | Essere |
|---|---|
| io | sia |
| tu | sia |
| lui/lei | sia |
| noi | siamo |
| voi | siate |
| loro | siano |
Avere
| Pronoun | Avere |
|---|---|
| io | abbia |
| tu | abbia |
| lui/lei | abbia |
| noi | abbiamo |
| voi | abbiate |
| loro | abbiano |
Notice that the singular forms (io, tu, lui/lei) are identical. Because of this overlap, include a subject pronoun if the context isn't clear. Additionally, the noi forms are exactly the same as their present indicative forms.
Expressing Opinions on Health and Nutrition
Use sia and abbia after triggers that express opinions (penso che, credo che), hopes (spero che), or impersonal observations (sembra che, è importante che).
| I think that the meal is nutritious. | Penso che il pasto sia nutriente. |
| It is important that the diet has vitamins. | È importante che la dieta abbia le vitamine. |
| I do not believe that the salad is balanced. | Non credo che l'insalata sia equilibrata. |
| Do you think that this diet has carbohydrates? | Pensi che questa dieta abbia i carboidrati? |
| It seems that the vegetarian diet is very healthy. | Sembra che la dieta vegetariana sia molto sana. |
You will often use both verbs together to describe a meal:
| It is important that the food is nutritious and has proteins. | È importante che il cibo sia nutriente e abbia le proteine. |
