Let's look at noi siamo (we are):

We are American.
Noi siamo americani.

In Italian, you can usually drop the subject pronoun because the verb form already indicates the subject. Siamo can only mean "we are".

We are here together.
Siamo qui insieme.

Use voi siete when talking directly to two or more people:

Are you busy today?
Voi siete occupati oggi?
Are you free or busy?
Siete liberi o occupati?

Finally, use loro sono for "they". You might remember that sono also means "I am" (io sono). Context—especially plural nouns and adjectives—will help you tell them apart.

They are cousins.
Loro sono cugini.
They are there.
Sono lì.

Putting It All Together

Because noi, voi, and loro represent groups of people, any noun or adjective describing them must also be plural to match.

The people are ready.
Le persone sono pronte.
You are busy people, but we are free.
Voi siete persone occupate, ma noi siamo liberi.
