When talking about things you wanted, could, or had to do, you must choose between the **imperfetto** and the **passato prossimo** forms of modal verbs like *volere* (to want), *potere* (to be able to), and *dovere* (to have to). The choice depends on whether the action actually happened or was just an intention.

### The Imperfetto: Intentions and States

Use the *imperfetto* (*volevo*, *potevo*, *dovevo*) to describe a desire, capability, or obligation where the outcome is unknown or serves as background information. 

Saying *Volevo uscire* (I wanted to go out) expresses your intention, but it doesn't reveal if you actually went out.

### The Passato Prossimo: Completed Actions

Use the *passato prossimo* (*ho voluto*, *ho potuto*, *ho dovuto*) when the action definitively happened or failed. It focuses strictly on the result.

Saying *Ho dovuto lavorare* (I had to work) means the obligation resulted in action: you actually worked. Similarly, *Non ho potuto* means you were prevented and definitively did not do it.

### Contrasting Intentions with Reality

You will frequently see these tenses paired to contrast what someone *wanted* to do (imperfetto) with what they *actually* did (passato prossimo).

Notice how the first half of the sentence sets the scene with a desire (*volevo*, *voleva*), while the second half uses the *passato prossimo* (*ho dovuto*, *ha dovuto*) to explain the concrete action that took place instead.
