Le nazionalità
To say where someone is from, use essere + a nationality adjective: Lui è giapponese. Country names are capitalized — l'Italia, la Francia — but nationality adjectives are always lowercase: italiano, never Italiano.
You already know italiano, inglese and americano. This lesson completes the set for the countries you have met:
| country | adjective |
|---|---|
| la Francia | francese |
| la Spagna | spagnolo |
| la Germania | tedesco |
| il Giappone | giapponese |
| la Cina (China) | cinese |
| la Russia (Russia) | russo |
Two shapes here. Adjectives in -o change like italiano: spagnolo/spagnola, tedesco/tedesca, russo/russa. Adjectives in -ese have one form for both genders, like inglese: francese, giapponese, cinese.
Note tedesco — German — which looks nothing like Germania: it is the one to memorize.
| The doctor is German and speaks Italian. | La dottoressa è tedesca e parla italiano. |
Asking
The noun is la nazionalità. Ask Di che nazionalità sei? — or simply Di dove sei? (where are you from?).
| What nationality are you? | Di che nazionalità sei? |
