Mixed conditionals: present condition, past result

Mixed Conditionals: Present Condition, Past Result

Sometimes, an ongoing situation or an inherent trait—like being naturally athletic or having talent—changes the outcome of something that already happened in the past. To talk about these hypothetical situations, we use another type of mixed conditional.

This sentence structure mixes an ongoing present reality with a past event. To build it, use this formula:

  • Se
    • Imperfect Subjunctive (congiuntivo imperfetto) for the present or ongoing condition
  • Past Conditional (condizionale passato) for the past result
If Marco were more athletic, he would have won the medal.
If she were stronger, she wouldn't have lost the match.

Inherent Traits and Ongoing Habits

When discussing sports and physical attributes, the ongoing condition in the se clause often uses the verb essere to describe an inherent physical state (like being fast or coordinated).

If you were coordinated, you wouldn't have fallen.
Se fossi coordinato, non saresti caduto.

However, you can also use avere to describe possessing a steady trait (like having courage or talent), or use a regular action verb to describe an ongoing habit that affected a past result.

If the directors had more courage, they would have hired the star player.
If he had more talent, he would have made the team win the match.
If she trained every day, she would have won the medal.
