Invariable plurals for accented nouns (le città, i caffè)

In Italian, nouns that end in an accented vowel (like à, è, or ù) are invariable. This means the word itself does not change in the plural.

To show that the noun is plural, change the definite article (for example, la becomes le, and il becomes i) along with any words describing it.

He offered the coffees with great generosity.
Ha offerto i caffè con grande generosità.
Universities appreciate the honesty of young people.
Le università apprezzano l'onestà dei giovani.

Abstract Qualities (-tà and -tù)

Many abstract concepts, personal qualities, and values end in -tà (often equivalent to the English "-ty") or -tù. These nouns are almost always feminine.

Following the accented vowel rule, l'attività (the activity) becomes le attività, and la virtù (the virtue) becomes le virtù.

This virtue is less widespread than courage.
Questa virtù è meno diffusa del coraggio.
Patience and courage are the best virtues.
La pazienza e il coraggio sono le virtù migliori.

Notice how modifying words like queste (these) and complicate (complicated) must still agree in gender and number, even though the noun's ending stays the same:

These activities are very complicated.
Queste attività sono molto complicate.
These curiosities are very interesting.
Queste curiosità sono molto interessanti.
