Exceptions (a condizione che, salvo che)

Sharing a living space requires setting clear expectations and finding a fair balance.

Cohabitation must be a fair compromise.
La convivenza deve essere un compromesso equo.
We establish the household chores every week.
Stabiliamo le faccende di casa ogni settimana.

Provided That

To agree to something only if a specific requirement is met, use the conjunction a condizione che (provided that / on the condition that). Because it sets up a dependent, conditional scenario, the verb in that clause must be in the subjunctive mood.

I accept the roommate, provided that he establishes the chores with me.

Notice that stabilire (to establish) becomes stabilisca in the present subjunctive.

We split the rent in half, provided that the agreement is fair.

Unless

To state a strict rule alongside its only exception, use salvo che (unless / except that). Just like a condizione che, this exceptive conjunction triggers the subjunctive mood.

I always do the chores, unless I am too tired.

When managing boundaries—such as bringing over guests (ospitare) or requiring advance notice (il preavviso)—salvo che helps you draw a firm line.

You cannot host anyone, unless you give me adequate advance notice.
Even though we are friends, cohabitation is difficult unless there is respect.
