Connecting Ideas with e

To connect two similar ideas, adjectives, or full sentences, use the conjunction e (and). It works exactly as it does in English.

The brother is young and nice.
Il fratello è giovane e simpatico.
I am the teacher and you are the student.
Io sono l'insegnante e tu sei lo studente.

Contrasting Ideas with ma

When you want to introduce a contrast or an exception, use ma (but). Just like in English, it is common to place a comma before ma when connecting two complete thoughts.

The book is not new, but it is very beautiful.
Il libro non è nuovo, ma è molto bello.
The man is nice, but the boy is bad.
L'uomo è simpatico, ma il ragazzo è cattivo.

Offering Choices with o

To present an alternative or ask an "either/or" question, use o (or).

Is this easy or difficult?
Questo è facile o difficile?
Are you the sister or the mother?
Sei la sorella o la madre?
