Questions & Answers about Hún velur þessa tegund.
Why is it þessa instead of þessi?
The verb velur (chooses) forces the thing being chosen into the accusative (object) case. Because the noun tegund is feminine, we must use the feminine accusative form of "this", which is þessa.
Does the noun tegund change its spelling in the accusative case?
No. For many feminine nouns like tegund, the accusative form is exactly the same as the dictionary form. The only visible clue in this sentence that the case has changed is the word þessa right before it.
How would I turn this into a question using hvaða (which/what) from this lesson?
You would say: Hvaða tegund velur hún? (Which type does she choose?). Notice that hvaða goes directly in front of the noun, just like in English. As a bonus, hvaða is very easy to use because it never changes its ending, regardless of gender or case!
Why does the verb velur end in -ur?
The dictionary form of this verb is velja (to choose). To make it match hún (she) in the present tense, we drop the -ja and add the common present-tense ending -ur, giving us velur.
