Questions & Answers about Þeir fljúga til Noregs.
Why does the word for Norway end in an 's' here (Noregs)?
This is because of the preposition til (to), which forces the noun following it into the genitive case. The dictionary form (nominative) for Norway is Noregur. To make it genitive, the common masculine ending -ur is dropped and replaced with -s.
Does fljúga mean 'fly' or 'are flying'?
It means both! Icelandic does not have a separate continuous tense like English does. The simple present tense fljúga translates to both 'they fly' (as a habit) and 'they are flying' (right now).
Why is þeir used for 'they' instead of þau?
Icelandic has three different words for 'they' depending on who or what you are talking about. Þeir is the masculine 'they', used for a group of men (or a group of masculine nouns). If it were a group of women, you would use þær, and for a mixed-gender group, you use the neuter þau.
