Questions & Answers about Ofnotkunin á tölvunni leiðir til ofþreytu.
How does the prefix of- function in the words ofnotkunin and ofþreytu?
The prefix of- indicates excess, meaning "over," "too much," or "extreme." It attaches directly to the nouns notkun (use) and þreyta (fatigue) to create the compound nouns ofnotkun (overuse) and ofþreyta (exhaustion or extreme fatigue).
Why is ofnotkunin in the definite form (the overuse) when the English translation uses the general gerund "Overusing"?
When an abstract concept is the subject of a general statement in Icelandic, it usually takes the definite article. While English uses the gerund "overusing" or the indefinite "overuse," Icelandic naturally says ofnotkunin (the overuse).
Why does the preposition á take the dative case in á tölvunni here?
When á connects a noun of action or use (like notkun, meaning "use") to its target, it generally governs the dative case. Since tölva (computer) is a weak feminine noun, its definite dative form is tölvunni.
Why is the final word ofþreytu rather than its dictionary form ofþreyta?
The verb phrase leiða til (to lead to) uses the preposition til, which always forces the following noun into the genitive case. Þreyta is a weak feminine noun, so its genitive form is þreytu, making the compound word ofþreytu.
