Wearing and Carrying with "vera með"
To talk about what someone is wearing, holding, or carrying, Icelandic uses the phrase vera með (literally, "to be with"). The item you have on you always takes the accusative case.
Instead of using different verbs for clothes, accessories, or bags, you simply conjugate vera (to be) and add með.
| Is the man wearing the hat and the sunglasses? | Er maðurinn með hattinn og sólgleraugun? |
| She is wearing a new hat and a beautiful necklace. | Hún er með nýjan hatt og fallegt hálsmen. |
The exact same structure applies to items you are carrying:
| I am carrying the umbrella because it is raining. | Ég er með regnhlífina af því að það rignir. |
| I am carrying a new laptop and the backpack. | Ég er með nýja fartölvu og bakpokann. |
| He is not carrying the backpack, but he has the passport. | Hann er ekki með bakpokann, en hann er með vegabréfið. |
Just remember to conjugate vera to match the subject (ég er, hún er, við erum).
