Logical deduction (hljóta að)

Logical Deductions

To state a logical conclusion or express that something "must be" the case, use the modal verb hljóta, followed by and the infinitive of the main verb.

Pronounhljóta
éghlýt
þúhlýtur
hann / hún / þaðhlýtur
viðhljótum
þiðhljótið
þeir / þær / þauhljóta

The verb following hljóta að is frequently vera (to be):

I find the student card, so the owner must be young.
Ég finn nemandakortið, svo eigandinn hlýtur að vera ungur.

Providing Proof

Explain why you are certain using the verb sanna (to prove) or the adverb greinilega (clearly).

This driver's license clearly proves it.
Þetta ökuskírteini sannar það greinilega.
He has clearly just gone to the gym.
Hann er greinilega nýbúinn að fara í ræktina.

More Clues and Conclusions

Everyday items—like a banknote (seðill) or a coin (mynt)—can reveal a lot about a person, such as whether they are single (einhleypur) or a vegetarian (grænmetisæta).

There is no banknote and no coin in his wallet.
Það er enginn seðill og engin mynt í veskinu hans.
The card proves that the man is a vegetarian.
Kortið sannar að maðurinn er grænmetisæta.

Deductions with Ongoing Actions

Combine hljóta að with the continuous aspect (vera að + infinitive) to deduce what someone must be doing right now.

He must be looking for his own wallet.
Hann hlýtur að vera að leita að veskinu sínu.
