Getting your licence

bílprófið is the driving test — Icelanders take it at seventeen. The official verb for driving is aka (ég ek, þú ekur), which you will meet on every road sign and form; in speech keyra does the same work. He drove too fast through the town.

On the road

spenna beltið — fasten the seatbelt — is the first thing the driving teacher says. lenda í (+ dative) is to end up in something you did not plan: We got into heavy traffic on the way.
