Instead of doing

You know í stað + genitive for things: í stað kaffis — instead of coffee. For ACTIONS, Icelandic wraps the same preposition around a clause:

í stað þess að + infinitive — instead of doing

The þess is the genitive of það, demanded by í stað; the að opens an infinitive exactly as in til þess að from the last lesson. The two frames are mirror images: til þess að points at a purpose, instead of (doing something)

The clause can open the sentence — then the main clause inverts (V2, as always): Í stað þess að keyra *gengur hann í vinnuna.*
