Why is the verb बजा and not बजी?
Because फोन is usually treated as a masculine singular noun in Hindi, and in this kind of past sentence the verb agrees with it.

- so the verb appears as बजा
Compare:
- घंटी बजी। = The bell rang.
- घंटी is feminine, so बजी
- फोन बजा। = The phone rang.

What verb is बजा coming from?
