What does מכסה המנוע mean literally, and why is it used for hood?
Literally, מכסה המנוע means the cover of the engine.
In everyday Hebrew, that is the normal way to say a car’s hood (British English: bonnet). So the sentence is naturally understood as The hood is open.
Why is there no word for is in this sentence?
Because Hebrew usually leaves out the verb to be in the present tense.
So:
מכסה המנוע פתוח
= The hood is open
But in the past or future, Hebrew does use a form of to be:
- מכסה המנוע היה פתוח = The hood was open
- מכסה המנוע יהיה פתוח = The hood will be open
