What does the article Το do here? Do I need an article with days of the week?
Greek often uses the definite article with days to mean “on [that] day.”
- Το Σάββατο = on Saturday
- For habits, prefer plural: Τα Σάββατα = on Saturdays; or use Κάθε Σάββατο = every Saturday.
- In everyday speech, you may also hear the article dropped: Σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά, but the version with the article is very common and feels a bit more natural.
Does Το Σάββατο mean “this Saturday” or “on Saturdays (in general)”?
It can be ambiguous without context.
- Specific/near future: Το Σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά can mean “This/that Saturday I’m waking up late.”
- Habitual: To make it clearly habitual, say Τα Σάββατα ξυπνάω αργά or Κάθε Σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά. Context usually makes the intended meaning clear.
Why isn’t it “στο Σάββατο” for “on Saturday”?
Greek does not use a preposition for days of the week. It uses the accusative as a time expression: τη Δευτέρα, την Τρίτη, το Σάββατο, etc. So it’s just the article + day, not σε + article.
Are days of the week capitalized in Greek?
Style guides prefer lowercase for days and months unless they start the sentence. In practice, many people capitalize them. In your example, many writers would use lowercase in the middle of a sentence: το σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά. At the start of a sentence you’ll see capitalization anyway (at least of the first word).
Why is it Το Σάββατο (neuter)? What are the genders/articles for all days?
Most days are feminine; only Σάββατο is neuter.
- Feminine: τη Δευτέρα, την Τρίτη, την Τετάρτη, την Πέμπτη, την Παρασκευή, την Κυριακή
- Neuter: το Σάββατο Note: You’ll see both τη and την in real use; both are acceptable before many consonants.
What exactly does ξυπνάω mean? Is it the same as σηκώνομαι?
- ξυπνάω = I wake up (I stop sleeping).
- σηκώνομαι = I get up (I get out of bed/stand up). You can wake up and still stay in bed: Ξυπνάω, αλλά δεν σηκώνομαι αμέσως.
Is there another correct form of the verb, like ξυπνώ?
Yes. ξυπνάω and ξυπνώ are both standard present-tense forms. ξυπνάω is very common in speech; ξυπνώ can sound a bit more formal or concise. Both are correct.
How do I conjugate ξυπνάω in the present?
- εγώ: ξυπνάω / ξυπνώ
- εσύ: ξυπνάς
- αυτός/αυτή/αυτό: ξυπνάει / ξυπνά
- εμείς: ξυπνάμε

Can I change the word order?
Yes. Greek is flexible with word order. All of these are natural; differences are about emphasis:
- Το Σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά. (neutral)
- Ξυπνάω αργά το Σάββατο. (slight focus on the action/adverb)
- Αργά ξυπνάω το Σάββατο. (emphasis on “late”) The meaning remains the same.
Where does αργά go, and can it mean “slowly”?
- Position: αργά usually follows the verb: ξυπνάω αργά. It can also be moved for emphasis, as above.
- Meaning: αργά can mean “late” (time) or “slowly” (manner). Context disambiguates:
- Time: Ξυπνάω αργά. = I wake up late.
- Manner: Μιλάει αργά. = He/She speaks slowly. For “very late,” say πολύ αργά. For “later,” use αργότερα. The opposite of “late” (time) is νωρίς (early).
Do I need to say “I” (Εγώ) in Greek?
No. Greek usually drops subject pronouns because the verb ending shows the person. Ξυπνάω already means “I wake up.” Use Εγώ only for emphasis or contrast: Εγώ το Σάββατο ξυπνάω αργά, εσύ νωρίς.
How would I make it negative?
Place δεν before the verb:
- Το Σάββατο δεν ξυπνάω αργά. = On Saturday I don’t wake up late.
How do I say “on Saturday morning/afternoon/night”?
- Το Σάββατο το πρωί = on Saturday morning
