Questions & Answers about Am Samstag koche ich langsam.

Why does Am Samstag come at the beginning of the sentence?

In German, it’s common to put a time phrase at the beginning for emphasis or clarity. Am Samstag tells us when the action happens, so it can be placed first. The verb (here, koche) still remains in the second position.

Why is the verb koche used instead of kochst or kocht?

German verbs change based on the subject. Ich koche means I cook. For du (you), it would be du kochst, and for er/sie/es (he/she/it), it would be er/sie/es kocht. Since the sentence starts with ich, the correct conjugation is koche.

Why does langsam appear at the end of the sentence?

Adverbs in German, especially manner adverbs like langsam, often come after the verb or at the end of the sentence. Placing langsam at the end emphasizes how you are cooking.

Does langsam strictly mean that I’m cooking slowly, or can it imply something else?

Langsam generally means “slowly.” It can literally mean you’re moving at a slower pace in the kitchen. Depending on context, it could also imply you’re taking your time or being careful.
