Questions & Answers about Het licht ging ineens uit.
What does ging uit literally mean, and why not say was uit or werd uitgezet/uitgedaan?
- ging uit = “went out,” a change-of-state event (the light changed from on to off).
- was uit = “was off,” a resulting state, not the moment of change.
- werd uitgezet/werd uitgedaan = passive “was turned off (by someone),” focusing on an agent’s action. It’s fine, but more formal/explicit than the neutral event-like ging uit. In everyday Dutch, for a sudden event you usually say ging uit.
Is uitgaan a separable verb here, and how do I conjugate it?
Yes, uitgaan is separable.
- Present: Het licht gaat uit.
- Past (simple): Het licht ging uit.
- Perfect: Het licht is uitgegaan. (auxiliary: zijn)
- Subordinate clause: … dat het licht uitging.
Why does uit go to the end of the sentence?
In main clauses with a separable verb, the particle (here uit) moves to the right edge of the clause: Subject + finite verb + … + particle.
- Het licht (subject) ging (finite verb) … uit (particle).
