Why does السيارة start with الـ?
الـ is the Arabic definite article, equivalent to the in English. So:
- سيارة = a car / car
- السيارة = the car
In this sentence, the noun is definite: the car.
Why is السيارة pronounced as-sayyāra(h) and not al-sayyāra(h)?
Because س is a sun letter. When الـ comes before a sun letter, the l sound is not pronounced; instead, the following consonant is doubled.
So:

- Pronounced: as-sayyāra(h)
