Questions & Answers about Das Unternehmen bedarf der Hilfe überhaupt nicht.
Why is der Hilfe in the genitive case instead of the accusative?
The verb bedürfen (to require or to need) is one of the specific German verbs that strictly governs the genitive case. Since Hilfe is a feminine noun, its definite article changes to der in the genitive.
What is the infinitive of bedarf, and why does it conjugate without a normal ending?
The infinitive is bedürfen. Because it is derived from the modal verb dürfen (to be allowed to), it follows the same irregular conjugation pattern. This is why the third-person singular form is bedarf without a standard -t ending, just as dürfen becomes darf.
How does bedürfen differ from brauchen? Could I just use braucht here?
Yes, you could absolutely say Das Unternehmen braucht die Hilfe überhaupt nicht. Brauchen is the standard, everyday word for "to need" and takes the accusative case (die Hilfe). Bedürfen means "to require" and belongs to a formal, elevated register, making it a great stylistic fit for a professional subject like das Unternehmen.
Why does überhaupt nicht come at the very end of the sentence?
When you negate an entire verb phrase rather than a specific noun, the negation nicht typically goes to the end of the clause. Here, überhaupt simply intensifies nicht to mean "not at all," and the entire phrase sits at the end to negate the company's action of requiring help.
