Questions & Answers about Mithilfe der Trage bringen die Passanten die Frau zum Krankenwagen.
Why is it der Trage when the word for stretcher is feminine (die Trage)?
The preposition mithilfe (with the help of) requires the genitive case. Because Trage is a feminine noun, its definite article changes from die to der in the genitive.
Why does the verb bringen come before the subject die Passanten here?
German follows a strict verb-second rule. The entire phrase Mithilfe der Trage takes up the first position in the sentence. To keep the verb in the second position, the subject die Passanten has to move right after it.
Is Passanten plural here, or is this an n-declension noun?
It is both! The singular is der Passant (the passerby). It is a weak masculine noun (n-declension), meaning it adds an -en ending in every case except the nominative singular. In this sentence, it is the nominative plural, so it takes the -en ending.
Why use zum Krankenwagen instead of in den Krankenwagen?
zum (a contraction of zu dem) focuses on the general destination (bringing her to the ambulance). While in den Krankenwagen (into the ambulance) would also be correct and emphasize moving her physically inside, zum is the most natural, everyday way to express this in German.
