Questions & Answers about Die Zeitung berichtet über den Unfall.
Why do we use über here instead of von?
Both berichten über and berichten von mean to report on or about something. However, berichten über is generally used for detailed, comprehensive reports like a newspaper article. berichten von is often used for shorter, more personal accounts or simply mentioning that something happened.
Why is it den Unfall in the accusative case? Doesn't über sometimes take the dative?
The word über is a two-way preposition, meaning it takes the dative for a fixed location and the accusative for movement. But that rule only applies when talking about physical space! When über is used as a fixed preposition combined with a verb to mean "about" (like berichten über or sprechen über), it automatically forces the accusative case. Since Unfall is a masculine noun, the article becomes den.
How would we change this sentence to use sollen as a rumor, like in the current lesson?
To say "The newspaper is supposed to be reporting on the accident" (meaning you heard a rumor about it), you would say: Die Zeitung soll über den Unfall berichten. The subjective modal verb soll takes the second position, and the main verb berichten gets pushed to the very end of the sentence in its infinitive form.
Could I use erzählen instead of berichten here?
You could, but it changes the tone. berichten is formal and objective, making it the perfect verb for a newspaper, police report, or news broadcast. erzählen means to tell or narrate a story, which sounds much more casual and personal.
