Questions & Answers about Die Unzufriedenheit außerhalb der Abteilung wächst.
How is the word Unzufriedenheit built?
It starts with the adjective zufrieden (satisfied). Adding the suffix -heit turns it into the feminine noun Zufriedenheit (satisfaction). Finally, adding the negative prefix un- gives us Unzufriedenheit (dissatisfaction).
Does adding the un- prefix change how the word is stressed?
Yes! When you add un- to a noun or adjective to negate it, the stress almost always falls heavily on the un-. You pronounce it UN-zu-frie-den-heit.
Why does it say der Abteilung if Abteilung is a feminine noun?
The preposition außerhalb (outside of) requires the genitive case. In the genitive case, the feminine article die changes to der.
Why does the verb wächst have an umlaut here?
The infinitive is wachsen (to grow). It is a strong verb that changes its stem vowel from a to ä in the du and er/sie/es forms. Since die Unzufriedenheit is third-person singular, we use wächst.
