Learn German: Stimmt das? - Is that right?

In English, we use the verb "is" with the adjective "right". But in German, stimmen is an actual verb that means "to be right" or "to be correct". Because it is an active verb, stimmt does the job of both "is" and "right" all by itself.

I learned that das means "the". Why does it mean "that" here?

You will often see das used as the neuter word for "the", but it also works as a pronoun meaning "that" or "this". Germans use das all the time to point back to a general idea, statement, or situation.

Why does stimmt come first in the sentence?

To ask a yes/no question in German, you put the verb in the very first position. If you want to make the statement "That is right," you put the verb second: Das stimmt. To turn it into a question, you just swap the words: Stimmt das?
