The German school that leads to university
das Gymnasium is the academic secondary school, and das Abitur is the exam you sit at the end of it — the qualification that opens the university door. Neither word translates cleanly, so learn them as the institutions they are.
Meine Tochter geht aufs Gymnasium. Er hat das Abitur gemacht.
Note the verb: you machen the Abitur, and you bestehen it if you pass.
| He did his Abitur. | Er hat das Abitur gemacht. |
der Stundenplan
Literally hour-plan — the weekly timetable of which subject falls when. Built from die Stunde (L57) and der Plan, and it is the ordinary word in every German school.
| The new timetable is hanging in the school. | Der neue Stundenplan hängt in der Schule. |
Applying for work
| die Bewerbung, -en | the application | Ich schreibe eine *Bewerbung.* |
| sich bewerben | to apply | Sie *bewirbt sich bei einer Firma.* |
| die Stelle, -n | the position, the job | Die *Stelle ist noch frei.* |

sich bewerben is reflexive AND takes a preposition — sich bewerben *um eine Stelle (for a position) but sich bewerben **bei einer Firma (at a company). It also has the vowel change of *werben: ich bewerbe mich, du *bewirbst dich, sie **bewirbt sich*.
| She is applying at a big company. | Sie bewirbt sich bei einer großen Firma. |
