When exploring dark, submerged caves, certain conditions can multiply the danger of an already risky situation. In English, we express this compounding effect by saying something is "all the more [adjective] because" of a specific reason.
In German, we use the proportional-causal structure umso ... als.
The Structure: umso + Comparative + als
This structure requires two clauses working together:
- The Main Clause: Place the word umso immediately before a comparative adjective or adverb (e.g., umso riskanter
- all the more risky).
- The Subordinate Clause: Use als to introduce the reason. In this specific structure, als does not mean "than" or "when"—it means "because" or "given that." As a subordinating conjunction, it sends the conjugated verb to the very end of the clause.
| The divers' situation is all the more risky because the depth is extreme. | Die Situation der Taucher ist umso riskanter, als die Tiefe extrem ist. |
Notice how the conjugated verb is pushed to the very end of the als clause:
| The river is all the more unpredictable because the visibility is very low. | Der Fluss ist umso unberechenbarer, als die Sicht sehr gering ist. |
| The situation is all the more stressful because the oxygen is limited. | Die Situation ist umso stressiger, als der Sauerstoff begrenzt ist. |
Using Infinitive Phrases
If the main clause features an infinitive phrase (using zu), the umso + comparative still sits in the main clause, the infinitive phrase follows it, and the als clause continues to provide the causal reason at the very end of the sentence.
| It is all the more dangerous to explore this depth because we have no help. | Es ist umso gefährlicher, diese Tiefe zu erkunden, als wir keine Hilfe haben. |
Using with Adverbs
This structure works perfectly with adverbs, too. For instance, you can use the comparative of gern (lieber) to express doing something "all the more gladly":
| We explore the cave all the more gladly because the visibility is perfect today. | Wir erkunden die Höhle umso lieber, als die Sicht heute perfekt ist. |
Whenever a condition makes a situation even more extreme, use umso paired with a comparative, followed by an als subordinate clause.
| A good flashlight is all the more vital because we are exploring these dark rocks. | Eine gute Taschenlampe ist umso lebenswichtiger, als wir diese dunklen Felsen erkunden. |
