Three Ways to "Put"
In English, we simply "put" things down. In German, choose your verb based on how the object will rest in its new location:
- stellen: to stand something up vertically (a plant, a box, dishes)
- legen: to lay something down horizontally (a key, a toy, a cushion)
- setzen: to seat or set down (people, animals, or things with a defined "bottom")
Directional Motion (The Accusative Case)
When you put an object somewhere, you move it to a new destination. Because these placement verbs describe an active change of location, destination prepositions—such as in (into), auf (onto), or unter (under)—must take the accusative case.
| Gender | Accusative Article | Example Destination |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | den | in den Korb, auf den Balkon |
| Feminine | die | in die Ecke, in die Schublade |
| Neuter | das | auf das Sofa |
| I am putting the plant on the balcony. | Ich stelle die Pflanze auf den Balkon. |
| The child puts the toy in the basket. | Das Kind legt das Spielzeug in den Korb. |
| The woman sits the baby on the sofa. | Die Frau setzt das Baby auf das Sofa. |
Tidying Up
These verbs are essential for giving instructions or talking about tidying up. Notice how the verb always matches the object's physical orientation.
| We want to tidy up. Please put the box in the corner! | Wir wollen aufräumen. Bitte stellt die Kiste in die Ecke! |
| Put the key in the drawer immediately! | Legt den Schlüssel sofort in die Schublade! |
