### das Amt

The office of an authority — the place you go for a permit, a registration, a benefit. Germans say *auf dem Amt* (at the office) and *zum Amt gehen*. It is also the abstract *post* or *office* someone holds.

Most of the compound words for specific offices are built on it: *das Finanzamt*, *das Einwohnermeldeamt*.

### Renewing

**verlängern** is *to make longer* — of a document, a contract, a stay. It is the verb that goes with **der Pass** and **der Ausweis**.

> Ich muss meinen Pass **verlängern** lassen.

Note **lassen** (L167): you rarely renew the passport yourself, you *have it renewed*.

**online** is an adjective and an adverb but never takes an ending: *ein **online** Antrag* is written *ein Online-Antrag*, and after a verb it simply stands as it is.
