Making comparisons (so ... wie, als)

As... As... (so ... wie)

To say two things are equal in a certain trait, like "as fast as" or "as well as", use the pattern so [adjective] wie.

A tiger is as fast as a lion.
Ein Tiger ist so schnell wie ein Löwe.
A crocodile swims as well as a fish.
Ein Krokodil schwimmt so gut wie ein Fisch.

To say something is not as [adjective] as something else, simply place nicht in front of the phrase.

The monkey is not as heavy as the bear.
Der Affe ist nicht so schwer wie der Bär.
A fox is not as dangerous as a wolf.
Ein Fuchs ist nicht so gefährlich wie ein Wolf.

More... Than... (als)

When one thing has more of a trait than another (e.g., "bigger than" or "more dangerous than"), you use the comparative form of the adjective followed by als (than).

An elephant is bigger than a bear.
Ein Elefant ist größer als ein Bär.
The lion is stronger than the monkey.
Der Löwe ist stärker als der Affe.

Remember, even long adjectives like gefährlich (dangerous) just take -er at the end. German doesn't use a separate word like "more"!

A crocodile is more dangerous than a snake.
Ein Krokodil ist gefährlicher als eine Schlange.
There is a snake here, but it is smaller than a mouse.
Es gibt hier eine Schlange, aber sie ist kleiner als eine Maus.
