Future passive (wird ... werden)

The Future Passive

To talk about grand plans for the future—like building a massive offshore wind farm—you will often need the Future Passive (Futur I Passiv). This lets you express what will be done to something, without necessarily mentioning who will do it.

To form the future passive, combine the rules for the future tense and the passive voice. The result is a structure that uses the verb werden twice:

  • The conjugated auxiliary verb werden takes Position 2.
  • The action is described at the very end of the sentence by the Past Participle followed immediately by the passive infinitive werden.
The wind farm will be built in the sea.
Der Windpark wird im Meer gebaut werden.

Just like in other tenses, you must conjugate the first werden to match the subject receiving the action. If the subject is plural, use werden in Position 2.

The new wind turbines will be transported soon.
Die neuen Windräder werden bald transportiert werden.

Expanding the Sentence

Even when you add complex information—like the purpose of the construction or specific tools being used—the grammatical frame remains intact. The conjugated werden stays in Position 2 (or immediately follows an introductory clause), and the past participle + werden cluster anchors the end.

In order to increase the capacity, a second wind farm will be erected.
Um die Kapazität zu erhöhen, wird ein zweiter Windpark errichtet werden.
The whole city will be supplied with electricity.
Die ganze Stadt wird mit Strom versorgt werden.

Subordinate Clauses

What happens in a subordinate clause (such as one starting with weshalb or dass)? As usual, the conjugated verb gets kicked to the end.

In the future passive, this means the conjugated wird or werden moves to the very end of the sentence, lining up after the past participle and the infinitive werden. This creates a neat three-verb cluster: Past Participle + werden + wird/werden.

The seabed is soft, which is why the foundation will be anchored deeper.
Der Meeresboden ist weich, weshalb das Fundament tiefer verankert werden wird.
The project is supposed to be huge, which is why the whole country will be supplied.
Das Projekt soll riesig sein, weshalb das ganze Land versorgt werden wird.
