Female forms (-in)

German makes the female form of a person noun by adding -in to the male form. The female form is always die:

malefemale
der Partnerdie Partnerin
der Lehrerdie Lehrerin
der Nachbardie Nachbarin
Our teacher (female) is new.
Unsere Lehrerin ist neu.
My teacher (female) comes from Berlin.
Meine Lehrerin kommt aus Berlin.
The neighbor (female) has a dog.
Die Nachbarin hat einen Hund.
My partner (female) also lives here.
Meine Partnerin wohnt auch hier.

Some nouns also take an umlaut: der Arzt → die Ärztin.

The doctor (female) works here.
Die Ärztin arbeitet hier.
I ask the doctor (female).
Ich frage die Ärztin.
The doctor (female) helps the child.
Die Ärztin hilft dem Kind.

The plural adds -nen: die Lehrerin → die Lehrerinnen, die Ärztin → die Ärztinnen.

The teachers (female) work at the school.
Die Lehrerinnen arbeiten in der Schule.
The doctors (female) speak German.
Die Ärztinnen sprechen Deutsch.

This works for almost every person noun. A final -e drops first: der Kollege → die Kollegin. When you learn a new male person noun, you already know its female form.
