The Preposition "gegenüber"
To say that something is "opposite" or "across from" something else, use the preposition gegenüber.
gegenüber always takes the dative case. Masculine and neuter definite articles change to dem, while feminine articles change to der.
| The large monument stands opposite the museum. | Das große Denkmal steht gegenüber dem Museum. |
| I am waiting for you opposite the monument. | Ich warte gegenüber dem Denkmal auf dich. |
| The statue, which is very old, is located opposite the church. | Die Statue, die sehr alt ist, befindet sich gegenüber der Kirche. |
A Flexible Position
Unlike most prepositions, gegenüber is flexible. It can be placed before the noun, as seen above, or immediately after it. Both positions are grammatically correct and mean the exact same thing.
| The beautiful church stands opposite the opera. | Die schöne Kirche steht der Oper gegenüber. |
| The fountain is located opposite the town hall. | Der Brunnen befindet sich dem Rathaus gegenüber. |
| The new statue stands opposite the park. | Die neue Statue steht dem Park gegenüber. |
Notice how the rules for gegenüber remain the same in longer sentences and alongside verbs like sich befinden (to be located) or bewundern (to admire):
| We wanted to admire the fountain that is located opposite the bank. | Wir wollten den Brunnen bewundern, der sich gegenüber der Bank befindet. |
| We admired the building opposite the opera. | Wir haben das Gebäude der Oper gegenüber bewundert. |
