German glues nouns together into one word. You have met compounds since the first lessons: die Hausaufgabe, das Wohnzimmer, der Geburtstag. The rule:
The last word decides. The last noun sets the gender and the plural; the first word only narrows the meaning.
| compound | last word | so |
|---|---|---|
| die Hausaufgabe | die Aufgabe | die |
| das Wohnzimmer | das Zimmer | das |
| der Geburtstag | der Tag | der |
| The homework is difficult. | Die Hausaufgabe ist schwierig. |
| We eat in the living room. | Wir essen im Wohnzimmer. |
| My sister's birthday is in January. | Der Geburtstag von meiner Schwester ist im Januar. |
The stress is always on the FIRST word: HAUSaufgabe, WOHNzimmer.
A linking sound often appears between the parts — Geburtstag, Krankenhaus:
| The hospital is next to the swimming pool. | Das Krankenhaus ist neben dem Schwimmbad. |
| I do the homework in the evening. | Ich mache die Hausaufgabe am Abend. |
| The lunch is cold today. | Das Mittagessen ist heute kalt. |
When you meet a new long noun, read it from the back: a Stadtbibliothek is a Bibliothek → die.
