Have you ever debated who would win a fight between the universe's greatest comic book heroes? To compare their unique powers, strengths, and weaknesses in German, you need comparative and superlative adjectives.
When a comparative ("stronger") or superlative ("strongest") adjective comes directly before a noun, it needs a declension ending just like any regular adjective.
Superlative Adjective Endings
To form an attributive superlative, take the base adjective, add the superlative suffix (-st or -est), and attach the standard adjective ending to the very end.
Because superlatives refer to "the most" of something, they almost always follow a definite article (der, die, das) and take "weak" adjective endings (usually just -e or -en).
| The most powerful superhero wears a red cape. | Der mächtigste Superheld trägt einen roten Umhang. |
Comparative Adjective Endings
For comparative adjectives, the process is exactly the same. Take the comparative form (base + -er) and add the appropriate declension ending based on the gender, case, and article.
This can look a bit repetitive, especially with masculine words. For example, to say "a crueler villain":
- Base adjective: grausam
- Comparative form: grausamer
- Adjective ending for a masculine subject after ein: -er
- Combined: ein grausamerer Schurke
| A crueler villain often has a greater weakness. | Ein grausamerer Schurke hat oft eine größere Schwäche. |
| A more skillful superhero can transform into a faster animal. | Ein geschickterer Superheld kann sich in ein schnelleres Tier verwandeln. |
Cases and Plurals
Standard adjective declension rules apply across all cases and plurals. The final ending of your comparative or superlative adjective changes exactly as it would for a basic adjective.
| He needs stronger magic to heal the worst wounds. | Er braucht stärkere Magie, um die schlimmsten Wunden zu heilen. |
| With the strongest magic, he can transform into the fastest animal. | Mit der stärksten Magie kann er sich in das schnellste Tier verwandeln. |
| Even the smartest villain has an even greater weakness. | Selbst der klügste Schurke hat eine noch größere Schwäche. |
