**die Socke** is almost always plural in practice — you own them in pairs — but it is a perfectly ordinary singular noun when you lose one.

### das Portemonnaie

Borrowed straight from French and still spelled that way, though you will also see the Germanised **das Portmonee**. It is the thing you keep money in; **die Tasche** (L11) is the bag you keep the Portemonnaie in.

### Weight, and the pound that is not a pound

**das Gewicht** is weight in general. **das Pfund** is 500 grams exactly — half a kilo — and it is still the everyday unit at a German market counter. It is NOT the British pound, and after a number it stays singular: *zwei **Pfund** Tomaten*, never *zwei Pfunde*.
