Extreme Degrees with "hoch-"
When sehr (very) isn't enough, German uses prefixes to intensify adjectives to an extreme degree.
The prefix hoch- ("high") attaches directly to adjectives to mean "highly" or "extremely." It is often used to describe intense situations or risks.
| When the disaster happened, the situation was highly dramatic. | Als das Unglück passierte, war die Situation hochdramatisch. |
| The search in the forest was highly dangerous. | Die Suche im Wald war hochgefährlich. |
Deep Emotions with "tief-"
For profound emotional states or reactions, German uses the prefix tief- ("deep"). It translates to "deeply" or "profoundly" and frequently combines with past participles functioning as adjectives, like erschüttert (shocked).
| The survivor of the disaster is deeply shocked. | Der Überlebende des Unglücks ist tieferschüttert. |
A Community's Response
Because major events impact so many people, related issues often become hochaktuell (highly relevant), and the community's emotional state is described as tiefbetroffen (deeply affected).
| The topic of safety is currently highly relevant. | Das Thema der Sicherheit ist gerade hochaktuell. |
| The community is deeply affected, because the loss is enormous. | Die Gemeinschaft ist tiefbetroffen, denn der Verlust ist riesig. |
