Questions & Answers about Je mange trop de chocolat.
The lesson is about beaucoup de and un peu de. How does trop de fit in?
Trop de means too much or too many. It belongs to the exact same family of quantity words as beaucoup de (a lot of) and un peu de (a little of). Because it is a quantity expression, it follows all the same rules you are currently learning! Chocolate is masculine (le chocolat). Why isn't it trop du chocolat?
This is a very common trap! Normally, de + le combines to make du. However, after expressions of quantity like trop de, beaucoup de, or un peu de, the word de never changes. It stays as a simple de (or d' before a vowel), no matter if the noun is masculine, feminine, or plural. If I want to say I eat too many chocolates (plural), does trop de change?
No, it stays exactly the same! French uses trop de for both uncountable things (too much chocolate) and countable plural things (too many apples, which would be trop de pommes). Why does mange end in an e and not an s?
Manger (to eat) is a regular verb that ends in -er. For the I form (Je), the correct ending is always e, making it Je mange. You only add the s for the informal you form, which would be Tu manges. Learn Je mange trop de chocolat and more in French
