In French, the pronoun tout means "everything".
| Tonight, the vice took him to the casino. | Ce soir, le vice l'a emmené au casino. |
Placement in Compound Tenses
In simple tenses, tout follows the verb. But in compound tenses like the passé composé, it is placed directly between the conjugated auxiliary verb and the past participle.
- a joué (gambled) becomes a tout joué (gambled everything)
- a perdu (lost) becomes a tout perdu (lost everything)
Notice how tout sits inside the compound verb:
| He gambled everything after his first bet. | Il a tout joué après sa première mise. |
| The dealer took everything, the bet and the profit. | Le croupier a tout pris, la mise et le gain. |
| Despite the fear, he lost everything at roulette. | Malgré la peur, il a tout perdu à la roulette. |
This placement is strict, even when the sentence continues with extra information.
| The banker understood everything. | Le banquier a tout compris. |
| The despair has destroyed everything in his life. | Le désespoir a tout détruit dans sa vie. |
